Recently, my son Jim started crawling. I knew I would have to keep an eye on him, but I wasn’t ready for how active he is. He gets into everything. The garbage, the dirty clothes, the cabinets. He even tries to play with the fireplace constantly. The first time he tried to climb into the fireplace was a terrifying wake up call for me. I went through the house and baby-proofed everything. I love my fireplace. I think it makes the entire house more homey and inviting, and it functions amazingly as a secondary heat source to our furnace. But since Jim started crawling, I have been too afraid to turn it on. While having our annual HVAC tune-up, our HVAC technician asked if we needed any help baby-proofing the fireplace. I didn’t know there was anything I could do to make the fireplace more safe! He told me that his HVAC company sold gates that were specifically designed to keep babies and toddlers away from the dangerous fireplace. I was relieved! Obviously Jim’s safety is the most important thing to me, but I did miss my fireplace. The HVAC technician came back the following day to baby-proof my beloved fireplace, and I have been able to operate it with no worries ever since. Now, I can leave Jim alone for a few minutes without having to worry that he will hurt himself while I have my back turned. You have to sacrifice a lot of things when you have a baby, and I didn’t want my fireplace to be one of them!
