I was unhappy when I realized that I needed to replace the roof on my home. For several years, I had been finding stray shingles in the lawn and the gardens. I knew the roof was old and in poor condition. We had been getting by with having sections patched for the last ten years. When there was a nasty spring thunderstorm, the roof started to leak in quite a few places. I hired a roofing contractor for an estimate, and was appalled by the cost of a new roof. The whole project was a terrible ordeal. The roofing crew trampled my gardens and spread shingles, nails and debris all over the yard. With the roof torn off, my house was filthy and uncomfortable. There was no way we could run the air conditioner, and the outside temperature was in the high eighties, with vicious humidity. We dealt with tons of dust, pollen, and bugs, and I couldn’t wait for the roofing job to be completed. When the roofing crew finally packed up their ladders and left, I turned the thermostat down and started up the air conditioner. I expected it to take the air conditioner at least an hour or two to cool down the house. I was shocked when my whole home was perfectly cool within twenty minutes. Since replacing the roof, my monthly energy bills have been reduced by a third. The air conditioner and furnace no longer run as long, work as hard, or require as much energy to operate. My home is cleaner, definitely healthier and far more comfortable. I had not realized how much energy the old roof was allowing to escape.
